She The Survivor - Lakshmi Agarwal
“He threw acid on my face, not on my dreams”
Lakshmi was a very simple, shy and broad minded girl. She was born on 1st June 1990. Her dream was to become a singer. But her dream was not supported by her parents. This horrific incident took place when she was only 15 years old in 2005. A man named Naeem Khan [32 years old] along with girl named Rakhi threw acid on Lakshmi. This was all planned by Naeem because Lakshmi had denied his proposal for marriage. When the acid was thrown on her she felt as if she was being burned alive and all her skin was melting like a plastic. 20 bucket full of water was poured on her to calm her burnt skin. She underwent 7 surgeries over the course of 7 years. Despite the various physical deformities, her mental health also suffered as she faced taunts and hate from society. Some people also went as far as questioning her upbringing and blaming her for the attack. She took her case against Naeem Khan to the court where he was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while Rakhi was sentenced 7 years. She also filed a PIL in the Supreme Court that received 27k signatures, seeking new laws and amendments that dealt with acid attack crimes, and also demanded a ban on the sale of acid. She has been not just an acid attack survivor but also became a symbol of hope and courage for many acid attack survivors. She is also a campaigner for rights of acid attack victim. A biography was also made on her named “Chhapaak” casting Deepika Padukon as the main lead. She has inspired many girls and women around the world and made them believe that women are strong, not weak and can pass through any circumstances with courage and hope.
