Meaza Ashenafi

Meaza Ashenafi is an Ethiopian lawyer,

Born:  July 25, 1954. In November 2018, she was appointed

President of the Ethiopian Federal  Court by Parliament.

In 2003, Meaza was awarded the Hunger Project Award

and she was awarded the Grassroots Ethiopian Women

of Substance Africa Prize. Two years later she was nominated

for the Nobel Peace Prize. Her most famous event was  the

2014 Ethiopian film Difret, co-sponsored by Angelina Jolie as

production director and awarded the World Film

Dramatic Audience Award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. 

Meaza has held positions on the 

Economic Commission for Africa.

She helped develop Enat Bank, Ethiopia's first women's bank,

which was founded in 2011 and

has led the board of directors since 2016.

As a human rights adviser to the Ethiopian constitutional

commission

which drafted the current Ethiopian constitution,

she ensured the protection of women’s and children's rights.

Meaza Ashenafi is currently a  gender and Women's Rights Advisor at UNECA's

Development unit.

She is  very active in advocating legal protection for women, promoting human rights

and monetary mediation for the benefit of women. She served as a High Court judge in

her native Ethiopia.
